This article provides a comprehensive review of literature on the economic growth-pollutant emissions
relationship. Using the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, the context of
selected East Asian countries is given focus. It has been suggested that trade liberalization and even
sociopolitical institutions may have an impact in determining the correlation between economic
prosperity and environmental degradation.
